When I deliver Leadership and Management training, my first questions I ask the participants are; “What do you do now to lead your team?” or “What characteristics make a good leader?” Resoundingly, the answer is often; “Lead by example” or “Someone that leads by example.”
Why is it important to lead by example?
Quite often actions speak louder than words. Our behaviour and what we do is often mimicked by our team. Put simply, if you want your team to be hard working, show respect and be honest, then you need to demonstrate those qualities consistently yourself.
By demonstrating the principles and values that are important to you, you will earn trust and gain credibility. By holding yourself accountable for your actions, your team will be more inclined to take responsibility too. All actions have consequences regardless of our stature.
Leading by example, in a positive tone, will motivate and inspire a positive workplace culture that leads to higher productivity and strong working relationships.
